17th October 2017
New state-of-the-art outdoor sports facilities opened at Hutton Moor Leisure Centre in Weston-super-Mare this week.
Three floodlit all-weather pitches and two floodlit tennis courts are now in use as part of North Somerset Council’s £2.15m scheme to improve the range of activities on offer at Hutton Moor.
The pitches are the first of their kind in this part of the country. They have a 45mm 3G surface with the latest sustainable and environmentally-friendly cork infill, creating greater player comfort as well as looking after the environment.
The pitches have been installed by Portishead-based Sportfields Ltd. Managing Director Geoff Collins said: “We are proud to provide this state-of-the-art 3G sports facility at Hutton Moor, the first of its kind in this part of the country. The new cork infill surface was chosen over its rivals not only for its fantastic performance and playing qualities but also for its recognised eco-friendly and health benefits.”
The pitches are available to book by emailing huttonmoor@legacyleisure.org.uk.
The council’s investment in Hutton Moor has also seen a new two-storey extension added to the leisure centre. This opened last month and has enabled the gym to be extended from 96 stations to 155 with the latest top-of-the-range equipment.
Two new multi-use studios, a cycle workout studio with 26 bikes and a brand new dance studio have also been added.
The changes have already seen around 600 new members join Hutton Moor in the last month.
The centre is run by Legacy Leisure on behalf of the council. General Manager Dave Somers said: “Our new fitness development has been extremely well received by existing customers and new members. We have attracted over 600 new members since the opening in mid-September.
“This expansion will allow us to grow with the local community and continue to meet fitness trends offering a wide range of top-class specialist equipment to keep everyone motivated and active.”
There is an opportunity to see the new indoor and outdoor facilities when Hutton Moor holds an open day this Sunday (22 October) from 10am-4pm.

CULLOMPTON RANGERS AFC
5th June 2017
Cullompton Rangers AFC is pleased to announce that at a cost of £39,000.00 a new sub-soil drainage system has been installed to its main football playing pitch and that the playing area should be ready for use in time for the 2017/18 football season.
The pitch at Eden Vale Park sits in the Culm Valley flood plain and in recent years been prone to long periods of surface water retention such that in the wettest winter periods large numbers of home games have to be cancelled. An example of this is that in the 2015/16 season there were no home games played between mid- November and mid – February meaning that in those 11 weeks not a single game of football was played at Cullompton.
In an attempt to deal with this ongoing problem the Club consulted land drainage experts and a number of solutions were put forward and after due consideration the Club decided to pursue the option of installing a primary land drainage scheme beneath and across the whole playing area with collected water out falling into an adjacent existing drainage system.
Quotations for such a scheme were invited from three contractors and in September 2016 the land drainage contractor Sportfields Ltd from Bristol submitted the lowest tender price and one which subject to funding being in place the Club were prepared to accept.
In pursuit of such funding the Club submitted in October 2016 an application to the Viridor Credits Environmental Company seeking financial assistance to meet the cost of the drainage work and in December we were advised that the company would support the project work to the sum of £30,000.00. This in effect left a shortfall of £9,000.00 to the Sportfields quoted price however following an application to the Football Foundation the Club has been advised that a grant to allow the full costs of the drainage work to be met would be offered by the Foundation.
Work started on Monday 2nd of May 2017 and was completed within 10 days, with the new drain runs in place, top soiled and reseeded and the Club’s grounds man now set on keeping the pitch well watered and protected to ensure complete recovery in time for the start of the new season in August 2017.
The Club’s Chairman Brian Horner said ‘The past few seasons have been very difficult with wetter winters and requiring more games to be cancelled but we hope that the new drainage system will make this a thing of the past. Without the financial help given by Viridor-Credits this would not have been achieved and the Club is extremely grateful for the help and assistance given by the staff at Viridor.
This is the second time that Viridor has helped the Club improve its facilities the first being about five years ago when we rebuilt our Club changing and shower facilities and all of us at Cullompton Rangers owe a debt of gratitude to the Company’..
The Managing Director of Sportfields Ltd, Geoff Collins, added ‘For our company having just completed the contract to build the UK’s first 3G Cork Infill Sports Pitch for Exeter City Football Club at the Cliff Hill Training Ground has been incredibly rewarding, and we believe that the additional drainage system provided will go a long way to solving some of the previous problems which Cullompton have encountered with their waterlogged ground.’
